Final collection progress

Screen printed design featuring my inky bird drawings

Ive been in a bit of a low mood recently which is why I've been reluctant to post on my blog. I'm starting to realise that there can be a difference between my personal work and designing for a commercial brief which is something I considered a lot before I started my degree show collection. I like things that are weird and unusual, I like drawing with ink and making mistakes and I like being bold and expressive. Right now I'm just happy to make things that express my own personal style!

Snippets of developments for my final collection

I actually went to a talk at The Hepworth last weekend called Printmaker as Designer from Mark Hearld, Angie Lewin and Emily Sutton. It was super encouraging to listen to as it helped me understand that I can be a printmaker / artist first and designer second. I'm way more influenced and inspired by art and illustration than patterns and textiles because a lot of the time they have so many restrictions. Hearing how these artists and illustrators adapted their work to fit textiles was the sort of wake up call I needed with regards to how I view my own practice.

With all of that out of the way this week I finally managed to start screen printing and I'm really happy with the results! It feels so good to get back into it again especially when things turn out the way you want them to. I'm definitely going to try and get back into blogging a lot more frequently even just for myself!
